Cape Cod “Healthy and Happy Eating For All” Resource Directory Released

 Results of the combined efforts of the Human Services Department and the Health and Human Services Advisory Council (HHSAC) “Healthy and Happy Eating For All” Sub-Committee to identify on-Cape food and nutrition-related programs and services have been released as the Cape Cod “Healthy and Happy Eating For All” Resource Directory. Descriptions and contact information for hundreds of on-Cape resources are included in this unique Directory. Directory entries are arranged by topic and by geographic region, making finding information on needed resources quick and easy.  The new directory is designed for use by the public, as well as, health and human service professionals, clergy, and anyone assisting persons in need of healthy-eating or nutritional resources or social “happy-eating” activities. Real Men. Real Depression

The Department of Human Services and the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition promotes anti-stigma campaign aimed at men and depression.

Research suggests that men are less likely to seek treatment for this serious illness; data also show that men die by suicide at four times the rate of women.

Using an effective national public health campaign created by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to raise awareness that depression is a major public health that affects an estimated 6 million men annually, the Coalition has launched a Cape and Islands public health education campaign from the NIMH –  ”Real Men. New Statistics on Suicides among Massachusetts residents

Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition Publishes Position Statement

The Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition is pleased to announce publication of a Position Statement outlining its public education and awareness strategy.  Although significant numbers of people attempt suicide, suicide is not a common event.  Yet when they occur, suicide threats, attempts and deaths ripple across all layers of a community.  With suicide rates 1 ½ times higher than the state average, Cape Cod and the Islands have identified suicide prevention as a public health priority. June 21st Community Forum on Suicide Awareness and Prevention

The Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition is hosting a community forum on June 21st from 6pm to 8pm at Barnstable High School Knight Auditorium to discuss suicide awareness and prevention.  Elected officials and candidates have been invited to be part of this community-wide forum.  The event is free and open to the public and will be moderated by Rob Sennott, retired publisher of the Barnstable Patriot.  Register at Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition.

New Research Publication on Cape Cod Seniors and Elders

May 6, 2010.  The Department of Human Services has released a new publication Cape Cod Senior and Elder Residents in the 21st Century.  The report is an analysis of the Cape’s demographics and data collected in the annual Monitoring the Human Condition study.  The findings show there are 81,000 permanent year round residents of Barnstable County who are age 55 or older.  Continue reading New Research Publication on Cape Cod Seniors and Elders

Forum on New and Effective Ways to End Homelessness

May 6, 2010.  The Cape and Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness is hosting a forum gathering federal, state and local legislators and policymakers, homelessness prevention, housing agency and community leaders to address efforts to end homelessness and discuss Regional Network initiatives.  The event will take place on Monday May 10, 2010 at the Cape Codder in Hyannis from Noon to 2:30 p.m.    Continue reading Forum on New and Effective Ways to End Homelessness
